Averill Woods and Averill School Clean-up  - November, 14, 2009

On Saturday, November 14, 2009, the Averill Woods Neighborhood Association held a clean-up of the Averill Park woods and Averill Elementary School with approximaly 100 volunteers from the neighborhood, school, city, and MSU combined.

Be sure to check out the "before," "during," and "after" photos and videos.

Thank you to our Volunteers

Approximately 25 Averill Woods neighbors and Averill Elementary Faculty, Staff, Students and Family members came to work on the clean-up day.

Assisting the neighborhood and school volunteers were approximately 80 MSU "Into the Streets" student volunteers and MSU graduate plant biology students and their families.

Students painted the exterior doors on Averill Elementary School, passed out flyers in the neighborhood, provided child care for volunteer families, and assisted a group of Averill teachers in completing a mosaic art project to be hung outside the school.

Lansing Parks and Recreation, specifically the Forestry Division, played a major role in the project. Irene Cahill, Forestry Supervisor, spent many volunteer hours assisting the neighborhood association by providing technical assistance in plant identification and trail construction. The department provided use of rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows and tons of wood chips. Both Irene and Murdock Jemerson, Parks and Recreation Director, were present on Saturday and provided team leadership roles for the MSU students.
