Landscaping the curb to slow traffic
Since vibrant landscaping near the street edge curb can slow traffic, we encourage the planting of low growing plants in this area, especially near street intersections.
You can replace the grass with low maintenance perennials so you don't have to mow or do much tending to the flowers.
Some plants that tolerate heat, infrequent watering, and poor soils in our area include daylillies, coneflowers, coreopsis, sedum, and so many many more!
You can find fabulous inspiration for low-maintenance and color plants at this beautiful website Greenwalks: Gardening where the sidewalk ends.
And thanks to my amazing friend LeRoy Harvey, alternative energy instructor at Lansing Community College and recycling and energy coordinator for Meridian Township, for sharing pictures of curb plantings in the East Lansing Marble neighborhoods! I hope to get pictures of the many examples in our Lansing neighborhoods as well. If you have pictures to share please contact me!
