Averill School and Community Garden Gets a Makeover!

Thanks to a host of volunteers and supportive community groups, we were able to make huge improvements at the garden at the Averill Elementary School site.

We have raised beds for use by the Averill students and some in-ground plots for Averill residents and Averill Elementary School families, faculty, and staff.  If you are interested in a garden plot please sign up.

Trucks arrive! -- Hammond Farms First.

Hammond Farms delivered our dirt on Friday (4/20/2012).  It was just before students went outside.  So the kids were super excited to see the big pile of dirt.  I know they exercised A LOT of restraint in not going over to play in the dirt pile.  The call of nature to come play is very powerful!!

More Trucks! -- The Tool Mobile is Here!

Early Saturday morning (4/21/2012) volunteers greeted the arrival of the Greater Lansing Housing Coalition's Tool  Mobile truck.

It was full of the kinds of tools we needed for our workday including the rototiller, chainsaw, shovels, rakes, power drills, power saws, post-hole diggers, and so much more.

Residents are able to borrow these tools for free or at a low cost if the take gas. Learn more about borrowing tools for your project.

Volunteers to the rescue!!

We had 20 volunteers from MSU who worked alongside our very hardworking volunteers from the neighborhood and Averill Elementary School to accomplish these tasks:

  • Built 4 raised beds, including one handicap accessible bed, for the elementary students to use in learning about environmental science, plant biology, composting, weather, nutrition and learn valuable skills in food production for self-reliance
  • Cleared out trees so we can use the compost bins effectively
  • Rototilled, raked, and weeded lots of garden beds so they can be used by Averill  residents and Averill Elementary School families, teachers, and staff.
  • Cut through logs that have fallen on the trails in the woods
  • We took the pictures of some amazing rare stuff growing in our woods
