Family Reading Night at Averill Elementary School
March 1, 2012 - Averill students, families, teachers, neighbors, and supporters enjoyed a fun evening together visiting many sites with a "Passport to Success." The theme of the evening was "Visiting our Natural Parks." Students got their passports stamped at each of the National Park Theme stations.
Our own neighbor and author, Mary Morgan, presented her children's mystery book on Michigan's National Lakeshore, "Stolen Treasures at Pictured Rocks" which some students are reading as part of the current reading theme of National Parks.
The PTA took book orders for Clara McCloud's "Fill your Bucket" series that that classrooms are reading. The books encourage positive behavior and help to understand how everyone's words and actions affect others. Clara McCloud recently visited Averill Elementary School to read her books to the classrooms!
The library was decorated in a Hawai'ian National Park theme to go with the very packed book fair! Students and families also used the amazing library media center to check out online resources as well.
There was also a Hawai'ian themed photo booth.
Neighbors Michelle Napier-Dunnings, Ken Jones, Robin Etchison, and Melissa Quon Huber and youth volunteers Storm, Spirit, and Rosalie, helped with set up and tear down. Volunteers from the University Baptist Church in East Lansing served a Hawai'ian dinner of metaballs, rice, and fruit kabobs provided by the school.
